Cholecystectomy - gallbladder removal

The surgery is performed in patients experiencing health problems due to gallstones. Gallstones are formed from thick bile produced in the gallbladder and cause a very painful condition known as biliary colic, which is very dangerous, particularly if the gallstones are small. Gallstones cause severe pain and fever. If they pass from the gallbladder to the bile duct, they may clog the bile duct, which might result in jaundice; they may also cause severe inflammation of the pancreas. The surgery is performed laparoscopically under general anaesthesia and requires short-term hospitalization.
