Neck, double chin, and chin surgery

The shape of the neck and double chin is influenced by the mutual relation between three types of tissues: muscle, fat, and skin tissue. Thus, a range of factors contribute to a cosmetic deformity; therefore, there is also a variety of different surgical procedures, which may correct or at least alleviate the problem – from neck lifting, through chin enlargement and reshaping, to an extensive reconstructive surgery.

What can chin, neck and double chin surgery solve?

In the space between the deep muscle layer and the dominant muscle of the superficial layer (platysma), a strictly demarcated fat pad is usually present, which may unfavourably deform the angle under the chin even in younger people. Another fat pad is located in the subcutaneous tissue; thus, it fills the space between the bottom layer of the skin and the platysma. Plastic surgery can remove these fat pads effectively.

Next, the quality of the skin cover has a great significance for the development of the shape of the chin and anterior neck. With increasing age, skin loses its natural tonicity and elasticity, it gradually droops due to gravitation and, frequently, relatively large skin excesses appear and deep wrinkles form. Neck-lift may improve the shape of neck and chin and results in youthful appearance of the skin.

Neck and chin surgery

During endoscopic correction of double chin and neck, the surgeon penetrates to the tissues through five short skin incisions placed bilaterally behind the ears in the submental line. The subcutaneous tissue is sucked out and the muscle is corrected with several stitches, which restores the natural angle between the chin and the neck.

Neck-lift complemented with endoscopy-assisted neck correction requires one day of hospitalization.

How is chin and neck surgery performed?

Most often, patients wish to undergo a reconstruction of the natural angle neck – chin. During this surgery, excessive subcutaneous fat pad is surgically removed through a horizontal incision about 5 cm long, placed in the submental line. The platysma muscle tissue then appears at the bottom.

If needed, the muscle is split at midline and even the second fat pad, which lies between the superficial and deep muscle layers, is removed. At the end of the surgery, the split platysma is sutured and strengthened.

Double chin liposuction

In the area of double chin, fat pad liposuction is a suitable addition to the plastic surgery procedures. During just one session in a plastic surgeon’s office, double chin liposuction may not only incredibly improve the chin shape but it can also rejuvenate the expression of the whole face.

Neck-lift

Neck-lift stretches the skin both in the lower part of the face and in the neck. During the very neck-lift procedure, mainly the platysma muscle is radically stretched. The incision is usually prolonged behind the ears along the hairline to the nape. The course of the post-operative period is identical to that after face-lift.

Neck-lift can appropriately complement facelift for even younger appearance.

Which procedure is the most appropriate for me?

The success of a plastic surgery procedure and, therefore, of patient’s satisfaction depends on appropriate choice of treatment approach. Sometimes, classical surgery is the right choice, other times the most modern surgical approaches are more appropriate; in many cases, combination of all the available techniques is optimal. The approach is therefore strictly individual.
